Liverpool: Fans approve of transfer report linking Dries Mertens with move to Anfield - Liverpool

A number of Liverpool fans have welcomed a transfer report from Italy linking Dries Mertens with a possible move to the Reds and would gladly take the player at Anfield.

Tuttomercatoweb reported that the Merseysiders are seeking to sign the 32-year-old on a free transfer when his contract with Napoli expires in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp looking for a versatile forward who can play both wide and centrally. The news of Liverpool’s apparent interest was later shared on Twitter by @AnfieldEdition.

Mertens, who has 90 caps for Belgium and made more than 300 appearances for Napoli, has scored 12 goals in 29 matches for the Serie A side this season, netting in both of their games against Liverpool in the Champions League group stage. While he has played predominantly as a centre-forward in recent months, he has often featured as a left winger during his career.

The Reds were linked with another prospective free transfer for Chelsea winger Willian last week (as per Sport, via Sport Witness), although Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle subsequently tweeted (via @IanDoyleSport) that he is not being considered as a transfer target by the Anfield club.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter feel that Mertens would be a fine addition on a free transfer, with one Kopite labelling him as “better than Willian“:

Liverpool fans, do you think the club should try to sign Mertens on a free this summer or should the Reds look elsewhere in the transfer market? Join in the discussion by commenting below!
