Liverpool supporters have been pretty satisfied in recent times despite seeing their side head into the international break winless in their previous four matches in all competitions.
Jurgen Klopp’s men possessed a 100% record in all competitions prior to their Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea back on September 26, only to lose 2-1 to Maurizio Sarri’s side before drawing 1-1 with the Blues in the Premier League a matter of days later. A 1-0 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League followed before a meeting with league champions Manchester City just prior to the fortnight interruption, which saw the two title rivals play out a 0-0 draw at Anfield to extend Liverpool’s winless run to four games.
Nonetheless, there have many satisfied Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times given their side’s solid start to the campaign, yet many have taken to Twitter recently to heap praise on Lyon forward Memphis Depay, with several impressed by his display for the Netherlands in their 3-0 win over Germany at the weekend to call upon Klopp to sign him.
But after a very tricky spell at Manchester United earlier in his career, and thus how he failed to adapt to the Premier League, those Liverpool fans are so wrong as the £40.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) doesn’t appear to be the man for Klopp’s team.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old impressed greatly at PSV Eindhoven to thus earn a move to United back in 2015, with the Dutchman touted by many to be the next big-thing at Old Trafford after such a stellar early phase of his career.
Yet the winger failed to produce the goods at the North West outfit with just seven goals and six assists to show for his 53 appearances for the Red Devils, just two goals of which came in the Premier League.
Yes, he performed reasonably solidly for United in Europe with three Champions League goals and two in the Europa League, but he simply wasn’t able to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, with Depay looking a shadow of the player that lit up the Eredivisie when turning out for the Red Devils in the league.
And while he has since reignited his career by shining for French side Lyon in the last 18 months or so, those doubts must surely still be had regarding his suitability to the Premier League – after all, Depay isn’t the first man to have struggled in the English top-flight.
And that is why Liverpool should be wary of making a move for the 24-year-old – yes, his form has been magnificent in recent times and he looks to have put his United nightmare behind him, but there are big questions over whether he can return to the Premier League and produce that level having failed to do so in the past.
And with the Reds well-stocked in the attacking department despite the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah not lighting things up in the last few weeks, those Liverpool fans are wrong to call for their club to sign him – he is someone who should not be on Klopp’s radar.
