Liverpool supporters have been in very high spirits in recent times after seeing their side maintain their 100% start to the new season by beginning their Champions League campaign with victory on Tuesday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their Group C encounter with French champions Paris Saint-Germain having won each of their opening five Premier League matches, thus propelling them to the summit of the division. And the Reds translated their excellent domestic form into their European campaign on Tuesday as goals from Daniel Sturridge, James Milner, and Roberto Firmino inspired the Merseysiders to a 3-2 win over Thomas Tuchel’s side, thus continuing their mightily impressive start to the season.
As such, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have taken to Twitter in recent times following the return to training of defender Dejan Lovren, with many suggesting that the Croatia international shouldn’t walk straight back into the team despite his fine season last term.
And given the start to the season Joe Gomez has made alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Reds backline, those Liverpool fans are absolutely spot on to suggest that £65,000-a-week Lovren (as per Spotrac) shouldn’t be anywhere near Klopp’s starting eleven.
Ultimately, the former Southampton defender was one man to greatly benefit from the club’s signing of van Dijk back in January of this year, with the 29-year-old elevating his game to strike up a formidable partnership with the Dutchman in the centre of Klopp’s defence.
And in helping the Reds reach the Champions League final, and then helping his country reach the World Cup final a few weeks later, Lovren is arguably enjoying the best football of his career to date, although his exertions at the World Cup alongside injury has prevented him appearing for the Merseysiders so far this season.
And in his absence, England international Gomez has staked his claim for a regular place alongside van Dijk with several commanding displays at the heart of the Liverpool defence, with the 21-year-old arguably outdoing the Dutchman in the early stages of the campaign.
The Reds have so far shipped just two goals in the Premier League and kept clean sheets in each of their first three games, and while van Dijk has played a key part in that, so has Gomez, with the duo striking up the sort of central defensive partnership Liverpool have been crying out for in the last few years.
That’s not to say that Lovren wouldn’t help strengthen that backline even further, but at present it’s difficult to see where the Croatian star fits in, as neither van Dijk nor Gomez deserve to lose their place in the starting eleven – although whether Klopp sees it like that remains to be seen.
As such, those Liverpool fans calling for Klopp to opt against recalling the 29-year-old are absolutely spot on, as messrs van Dijk and Gomez have made an excellent start to the season, and as such simply must be kept in the centre of the Reds defence.
