Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their side maintain their 100% start to the season by kicking off their Champions League campaign with victory on Tuesday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their meeting with French giants Paris Saint-Germain having won each of their first five games in the Premier League, thus propelling them to top spot at this early stage of the season. And the Reds got their European quest off to a great start as well as goals from Daniel Sturridge, James Milner, and Roberto Firmino inspired the hosts to a 3-2 win at Anfield, thus maintaining their incredible start to the 2018/19 campaign.
Thus, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have taken to Twitter in the aftermath of Manchester City’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Lyon on Wednesday night, with many taking aim at Citizens striker Gabriel Jesus.
And many harped back to comparisons made in the past regarding Jesus and compatriot Firmino, and those Liverpool fans stating that the latter is better than the former at present are absolutely spot on.
Ultimately, much was made of Jesus’ bright start to life in English football when he joined City back in January 2017, what with the Brazil international netting seven goals and laying on four assists in just ten Premier League games for Pep Guardiola’s side in the second half of the 2016/17 season.
And in keeping Sergio Aguero out of the team for much of that spell, big things were expected of Jesus last term in his first full season in English football, and while 13 goals in 29 league games is not a bad return, it maybe wasn’t quite what many expected from the 21-year-old.
And when one takes into account his reasonably sluggish start to this season, having netted just once in seven appearances in all competitions for City, it’s difficult to make the case that the Brazilian is outperforming compatriot and fellow forward Firmino.
The Liverpool frontman has been at the heart of what good the Reds have produced going forward for some time now, what with the 26-year-old scoring 27 goals and laying on 17 assists in all competitions for Klopp’s side last term – he surely would have won the club’s Player of the Year award if it weren’t for a certain Mohamed Salah.
And in starting this season on fire as well with three goals and two assists in six games for Liverpool, Firmino is in the form of his life and is giving Klopp a huge amount upfront – even when he is not scoring, the Brazil international is producing a high-level of performance in other aspects of the forward role.
And with Jesus struggling to make much of an impact at City in the first few weeks of the season, it’s difficult to argue with those Liverpool fans who have asserted that their £72 million-rated man (as per Transfermarkt) is better than the 21-year-old.
