With Liverpool having spent big, big money over the course of the summer, much of the talk on Merseyside has naturally been about this summer’s signings. Indeed, both Alisson (Leicester City gaffe aside) and Naby Keita have proven wonderful additions thus far, with the Reds still yet to see the real impact of people like Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.
However, Liverpool are more than just big-name signings and part of what has made Jurgen Klopp’s project on Merseyside so interesting is the way he’s coached the players he inherited from Brendan Rodgers back in 2015. Under the German’s watch, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino and Joe Gomez have all improved, while the evergreen James Milner is seemingly getting better with age.
Though the likes of Fabinho and Keita have arrived to increase the competition in the Liverpool midfield, Milner looks crucial to the engine room and a certain starter for Klopp. In fact, he’s been so good that we recently asked our Kopite readers whether they thought the former Manchester City man was the best player they’ve had in the middle since Steven Gerrard.
Interestingly, 69% of supporters voted in favour of that notion.
Though Henderson captains the side and Keita may run him close the longer he sticks around, it seems the majority of Liverpool fans back Milner as their best since Stevie G.
