Liverpool: Fans criticise Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance after the Reds endure a miserable return to Atletico

Plenty of Liverpool fans were frustrated with defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and his performance during his side’s 1-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old started in the Wanda Metropolitano, the same stadium where they beat Spurs 2-0 last June to win their sixth European crown. Saul Niguez scored the only goal of the game after just four minutes to set up an interesting second leg at Anfield. With no shots on target during the 90 minutes, fans focused their attention on one man’s contribution in Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold, who is valued at £99m by TransferMarkt, lost possession 36 times, only completed three crosses out of 17 attempted and won just one aerial duel out of five that he was involved in, as per Sofascore. Unsurprisingly, supporters were not impressed and made their feelings clear on social media. One fan said that his showing was below average, while another simply described him as “awful”.
