Liverpool: Fans drool over Zinedine Zidane comment on Steven Gerrard - Liverpool

Zinedine Zidane has taken the time to talk about a Liverpool club legend. The Real Madrid icon has revealed that he urged the Spanish outfit to coax Steven Gerrard into joining them in La Liga whilst he was in the squad, but that his loyalty to the Merseyside outfit shone through (via @LFCTransferRoom).

The former Reds skipper is always included in debates over who the best English midfielder was in the Premier League. Prime Gerrard was a player that clubs were tripping over themselves to try to sign, and one very nearly did.

Back in 2005, a 25-year-old Gerrard almost put pen to paper and signed for rivals Chelsea. The transfer obviously didn’t go ahead and he would go on to spend another decade with the Reds before making a move to the MLS to see out his final year on the turf.

His drive, skill and raw passion made him a huge target for the big dogs, including Real Madrid. Zidane has spoke out about how the La Liga giants tried on two occasions to bring Gerrard to Spain to be a midfield partner for the No.5 (via Bleacher Report)

“I have said in the past that at his peak he [Gerrard] was the best in the world,” said the Frenchman. “In 2004 I was having a conversation with Florentino Perez and I told him I wanted him to partner me in midfield for Madrid. I know the club tried twice but he wouldn’t leave Liverpool.

“Not many players turn down Real Madrid but I think that tells you a lot about the loyalty of the man.”

Liverpool fans are loving the quotes from Zidane, with one supporter gushing that Gerrard is a ‘legend for a reason’.
