Liverpool: Fans loved this piece of skill from Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool won at St Mary’s for the third consecutive visit on Saturday, defeating Southampton 2-1 to make it two wins out of two at the start of the Premier League season.

Former Saints attacker Sadio Mane opened the scoring for the visitors on the stroke of half-time and Roberto Firmino doubled the Reds’ lead on 71 minutes before Danny Ings pulled one back for the hosts against his former club late on. [via Sky Sports]

Mane wasn’t the only Liverpool player returning to his old stomping ground on Saturday – Virgil van Dijk was also lining out against his previous employers and the defender produced a sumptuous piece of skill in the second half.

His flick of the ball over his shoulder while facing towards his own goal under pressure from Nathan Redmond was picked out by Liverpool’s official Twitter channel.

The Netherlands centre-back had a less assured moment later in the match when his backpass to Adrian was booted straight to Ings by the Liverpool goalkeeper and the Southampton man duly halved the deficit to ensure a nervy finish to the game for the visitors. [via Sky Sports]

However, Van Dijk was still on the winning team at St Mary’s for the third time in a row since leaving Southampton for Liverpool in January 2018 and these Reds fans were awestruck by his composed, nonchalant clearance with one even aiming a dig at Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, who recently surpassed the Dutchman as the most expensive defender in the world:
