After their triumph at Anfield on Wednesday, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has commented on his side’s win, but it isn’t what many would have expected.
The 49-year-old, although elated with Atletico’s progression into the Champions League quarter-finals, has spoken out about the ‘unfair’ nature of the European away goal rule.
“We had 30 more minutes to score an away goal and Liverpool didn’t. That’s not fair,” said the Argentine. “The rule favoured us today but it might go against us in future. Liverpool had 30 minutes fewer to score an away goal. That’s wrong.”
The Spaniards held a slim 1-0 lead over Liverpool before they travelled to Merseyside for the second leg. Jurgen Klopp’s men look sure to be going into the next round until the match turned completely on its head after an Adrian blunder and Atletico stormed into the quarters.
Reds fans are loving Simeone’s ‘class’ response to the away goal rule, earning the respect of many. One supporter is even hoping he goes on to ‘win the whole thing’ while another has said ‘they deserve a CL’, obviously depending on whether or not the tournament is concluded due to recent events.
Respect him even more now. Go and win the whole thing Diego ❤️

He gets a lot of stick but he’s been an incredible manager. They deserve a CL. Maybe this is the year their luck is in

Simeone is many things but he is a classy manager Jurgen and Cholo actually have a lot of mutual respect for each other. Easy to see based on previous joint appearances. pic.twitter.com/dyFbLQNKGU
