Roberto Firmino finally broke his goal duck for Liverpool in Wednesday’s match against Atletico Madrid. His late Anfield header is the first goal he has scored on home soil since April 2019.
It took 329 days but Firmino’s feud with the back of the Anfield net is over after his extra-time header against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16.
Although fans are deflated, many are celebrating Firmino’s return to goal-scoring action and hope he can continue his form in the remaining Premier League games.
The 28-year-old was the most accurate passer out of any other player that was on the pitch for 45 minutes or more (via FotMob). This is also his first goal contribution in eight games for the club – his last involvement in the action was his impressive three assists against Southampton in February (via Transfermarkt).
Fans are delighted that Firmino played well despite the result, with one fan celebrating ‘the return of the king’. Another supporter has said ‘he’s so class he assists himself’ after the Brazilian’s initial shot on goal rattled the post.
