The Transfer Tavern’s Liverpool contingent are whetting their whistles and discussing their expectations for this Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
There’s little love lost between the Reds and their local rivals, who make the short trip across Stanley Park in the Premier League’s opening fixture this weekend.
It’s safe to say Liverpool have fared significantly better in Merseyside derbies in recent years, winning three and drawing three of the last six.
But the Toffees almost held them to a scoreless draw last time out, until Sadio Mane’s last-second winner at Goodison Park, and will be looking to exact revenge at Anfield after being on the receiving end of a 4-0 defeat there last season.
It’s good news for Liverpool fans, then, that captain Jordan Henderson is stepping up his rehabilitation from injury in the hope of putting himself in contention for Saturday’s clash – according to The Liverpool Echo.
The England midfielder suffered a foot injury prior to Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester last month and was consequentially ruled out of the Three Lions’ loss to Germany and win over Lithuania last week.
But he took part in a warm weather training camp during the international break instead and is now pushing to be fit in time for Saturday’s 12.30pm kickoff – although there are still no guarantees he’ll be involved in the match.
