Loads of Liverpool fans have slammed former England manager Steve McClaren after stating that Virgil van Dijk would be the only player to get into Manchester United’s treble-winning side of 1999.
The Reds are currently 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League table ahead of Manchester City and have only dropped two points at Old Trafford back in October. Their 30-year wait for a domestic title looks set to be over which comes off the back of winning the Champions League in Madrid, the Super Cup in Istanbul and the Club World Cup in Doha. Indeed, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been compared to the likes of Arsenal’s Invincibles of 2004 in one of many glowing appraisals towards his team during the current campaign.
But McClaren, who was assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at the time, believes that the Merseyside club are some way behind the United team of the late 90s. He told Sky Sports that Liverpool’s Dutch talisman would be the only player that makes the grade, meaning that there would be no place for Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino.
Unsurprisingly, supporters were furious with his comments with one fan calling him “clueless”, while another labelling him as a “wet plank” in direct relation to his nightmare evening as England manager against Croatia in 2007. They weren’t done there, as one disgruntled fan said that these comments alone are why he failed in football management.
