Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has suggested that Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is using the club as a “stepping stone” to secure a move to Real Madrid.
The 27-year-old scored his 15th Premier League goal of the season during his side’s 3-2 win against West Ham United on Monday night and is once again the club’s top goalscorer, with Sadio Mane behind him with 13 and Roberto Firmino with eight in the Premier League. However, speaking with Sky Sports (cited by the Daily Mail), Neville believes that Salah has higher aspirations in football and is using his current side in order to get there.
“It’s never easy to replace a player like that,” he said. “I said 18 months ago I thought Mo Salah would leave Liverpool. I think it’s a little bit more simple in the sense of why Liverpool fans maybe don’t demonstrate that love for Salah, and it’s affinity and loyalty. I think there’s a feeling that he wants to go and play at Real Madrid, he’ll go to Barcelona, he’ll take the big move.
“That’s not a criticism of Mo Salah. I played with David Beckham, I played with Ruud van Nistelrooy, played with Cristiano Ronaldo – they wanted to aspire to win the Ballon d’Or, they wanted to be at Real Madrid, they wanted to be up in lights and play at the biggest clubs in the world.”
Neville continued. “I think there’s a feeling, affinity, loyalty, ‘will he leave us?’, I think he could. I think he is ultimately using Liverpool potentially as a stepping stone for his career. He has aspirations to be [higher]. Let’s be honest, Real Madrid and Barcelona for a lot of players are the pinnacle.”
Since arriving at Anfield back in the summer of 2017, Salah has won the Premier League Golden Boot every season that he has played for the club so far and has raised the bar when it comes to goalscoring ability in England. His teammate and Egypt captain Ahmed Elmohamady labelled him as one of the three best players in the world, having already scored 90 goals in 140 appearances for the club, as per TransferMarkt.
Will Mo Salah leave Liverpool in 2020?
Still, the likes of Xabi Alonso, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho have all left the Reds for La Liga over the years so there certainly is precedent even despite the club’s current success.
