Despite a truly wonderful campaign, the need to build a strong squad for next season remains at Liverpool, who would surely ideally like to upgrade multiple positions in the summer.

Midfield is a department they should be giving priority to, mostly due to the lack of creativity or flair through the middle.

While there’s no denying the willpower or energy Liverpool’s midfielders have displayed this season, there’s little creative swagger among their midfield unit currently. Indeed, 'workmanlike' has been bandied about far too often. After all, there’s a reason most assists have come from wing-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson this season.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have the likes of Kevin de Bruyne or David Silva to create sparks from the middle. Liverpool are also looking for that spark, but need to be careful whom they chase. According to reports (via Daily Mirror), they’re interested in Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes.

However, Fernandes doesn’t possess the magical creative edge they’re looking for. He can’t really conjure up magic from the middle at will, breaking teams down when the opposition sit behind the ball, which is exactly what the Reds need these days. While he does have the resolve so prominent in Liverpool’s midfielders, the Reds are already stacked in players high on energy. They need someone to split open defences with ease and create more chances through the middle.

Not more of the same please, Klopp.

Unfortunately, Gedson isn’t that kind of a player. He only has two assists throughout the season, not having a single goal. While the 20-year-old is a hard-working, tough-tackling figure to add steel to anyone’s midfield, he doesn’t possess the swagger Jurgen Klopp is in need of.
