Football pundit Tony Cascarino believes that Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu would be a fine addition to the Liverpool squad – and has urged the Reds to seek a player of the Spaniard’s style.
Deulofeu was part of a Hornets side that created plenty of chances at Anfield on Saturday and Cascarino believes he could be someone that chips in from time to time in the same manner as regular substitute Xherdan Shaqiri.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Cascarino highlighted the role Deulofeu plays and thinks that he could fit in well at the home of the Premier League leaders.
He said: “Deulofeu caused Liverpool a lot of problems because he runs in behind and he always wants to take players on, he’s very good at it.
“I could see him in the Liverpool team. He’s that type of player that would fit perfectly into their system.
“He probably wouldn’t make the starting lineup but like Shaqiri, he could come in and do a fabulous job because he really hurts you.
“He’s sort of a wasted talent in some ways.”
Whether or not Deulofeu could boost Liverpool’s attacking threat, Cascarino’s notion that he would be unlikely to dislodge their usual starters out wide (which is a fair point in itself) arguably makes Anfield a rather unattractive place for the former Everton man.
And given that Liverpool appear set to welcome RB Salzburg winger Takumi Minamino to the club in January, Deulofeu would likely be facing even stiffer competition just to get on the pitch if the Reds were to heed Cascarino’s advice.
So while it may not be a realistic prospect, it seems that if Liverpool were to take a chance on ‘wasted talent’ Deulofeu, he could live up to that particular label on a grander scale if he were to make a future switch.
