Former Liverpool player Graeme Souness believes the turning point for Liverpool’s all-conquering squad was the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in 2018.
Is Adam Lallana worth keeping for Liverpool?
The Brazilian midfielder moved to the La Liga giants for a nine-figure sum almost two years ago, with the Reds signing Virgil van Dijk in the preceding days.
Liverpool then went on to sign goalkeeper Alisson in the following summer, with Coutinho’s compatriot winning the Champions League in his first season at Anfield.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness indicated that Coutinho’s sale heralded the success that Liverpool have enjoyed since his departure.
He said (via Daily Star): “Maybe, for the neutral, they were a better watch a couple of years ago.
“But when they got rid of Coutinho and brought in Van Dijk and Alisson, that’s when they made that jump.
“All of a sudden, they’re a proper team.”
Souness’ theory is certainly a fair one to make, especially given the amount of success Liverpool have had since January 2018 in reaching successive Champions League finals and with a prospective Premier League triumph on the current horizon.
Liverpool have barely looked back by reacting to their disappointment of falling short in 2018 by accruing 97 Premier League points last season and being crowned champions of Europe for a sixth time in their history.
Whether Liverpool were on that path regardless of Coutinho’s exit is anyone’s guess, but there can be little denying that they have recruited well with the funds they received from Barcelona, with subsequent arrivals including Alisson and Fabinho becoming established parts of Klopp’s squad.
It seems that the funds have been key to Liverpool’s success rather than the fact they lost a player of Coutinho’s calibre – especially considering the club have hardly directly replaced the Brazilian in an attacking-midfield role.
However, it is worth noting how Liverpool have seemingly bought their way to glory from the sale of one player and their successful recruitment thereafter.
