Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes that 18-year-old Neco Williams could stake a claim to become part of Wales’ Euro 2020 squad in the summer.
Ryan Giggs’ side will play Switzerland, Turkey and Italy at the finals in June, and although Williams is yet to make his senior international debut, Rush feels his confidence could make him a candidate to take a place amongst the travelling party.
He said (via BBC Sport): “I think Ryan Giggs has got to look at him. He’s a great player. He’s getting better all the time and it all comes down to confidence. I’m sure that Jurgen [Klopp] has made him a very confident player.
“He’s learning from some great players day in, day out so I think it’s only a matter of time now before the under-21s and if he’s got anything about him, which he has, he’ll be thinking, ‘I want to get in the Euros’. You’ve got to aim for the top and these competitions don’t happen every year. You’ve got to be given a chance and you’ve got to take the chance as well. I’d love to see him on that plane.”
Do Liverpool need to make more signings?
It sounds like Rush may feel Williams only has an outside chance if he has to progress to the under-21 squad in order to become a fully-fledged international before the European Championships get underway.
However, the fact that he is being talked up ahead of a possible international call-up, never mind at a major tournament, is a sign of the promise Williams potentially holds in the eyes of Rush. And having made a couple of first-team appearances for Liverpool this season, there is little to suggest Williams does not have a bright future.
His debut in the 5-5 EFL Cup draw with Arsenal in October saw WhoScored name him as Liverpool’s best performer bar two-time goalscorer Divock Origi, while his place in this month’s Merseyside derby is perhaps a justification of the confidence Rush alludes to as he holds out a hope for his compatriot to make the Wales squad later this year.
