Liverpool in talks for potential club-record Van Dijk deal, Reds could have advantage over rivals

Choo, choo… The Southampton to Liverpool Express may be back on the rails this summer according to Football Whispers, who report that the Reds are in talks regarding a move for Virgil van Dijk.

The Merseysiders have signed the likes of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane from the Hampshire club since the summer of 2014, spending a vast sum of money in the process.

And Football Whispers claim that Van Dijk is next on their hit-list as they plot to solve their defensive issues, with talks between the clubs and the Dutchman’s representatives having already started.

It’s understood that although the Saints value their man at around £50m, Liverpool are hopeful of doing business at closer to £40m – which would usurp the £35m record fee paid for Andy Carroll in 2011 – and have seemingly been undeterred by his current injury woes.

Football Whispers also hint that their relationship with Van Dijk’s representatives, Wasserman, may work in their favour amid interest from other clubs, with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Clyne and Divock Origi clients on their books.

Virgil van Dijk is the perfect summer signing for Liverpool – agree?
