Liverpool failed to overturn the 1-0 deficit from the first game at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium and ended up losing the whole tie 4-2 on aggregate, crashing out of the Champions League.
It’s pretty safe to say that the reigning champions and one of the big favourites for the crown being eliminated in the round of 16 is quite a surprising turn of events, especially given their record of turning things around under the lights at Anfield.
Still, it’s not like Liverpool were bad on the night. Quite the contrary as the Reds dominated the proceedings for the full duration of the game, only succumbing to Diego Simeone’s tactics in extra time. Indeed, as per WhoScored, they enjoyed 71% of possession and had 24 more shots than Atleti’s 10, so it’s not as if they were completely stifled.
According to James Pearce, however, the idea of Simeone somehow delivering a masterclass and outplaying Liverpool is completely ridiculous as the Reds played their best game of the year the other night but Atletico simply rode their luck.
Good luck to Atletico but the idea that was some kind of Simeone masterclass is ridiculous. They were completely outclassed in normal time. Best #LFC performance in 2020 so far. Atletico rode their luck, survived and then punished a massive mistake.

There is no doubt that Liverpool played well when looking at the stats and, were it not for some individual mistakes and the heroics of Jan Oblak, things could well have been different. After all, they hit the woodwork when 1-0 up on the night, too.
