Two Liverpool players are likely to agree new terms that would extend their respective stays at Anfield, according to one journalist who covers the club.
Pearce, who previously covered the club for the Liverpool Echo, said that Wijnaldum is “very happy at Anfield” and that Jurgen Klopp is “in no doubt” about his quality. However, he felt that Matip’s situation could be trickier as he is “a high earner” after joining on a free transfer with “a hefty signing-on fee“.
This Is Anfield reported that Matip’s current deal concludes next year, with Wijnaldum currently contracted up to 2021.
Netherlands midfielder Wijnaldum made 36 Premier League appearances in his first season at Anfield and then played in 33 and 35 league games in the following two campaigns, having started at least 27 league matches in each of his three seasons at the club.
He has also been in the starting line-up for all four of the Reds’ Premier League outings so far this term, as per WhoScored.com.
Cameroon centre-back Matip made 29 league appearances in his first season at the club, but those figures have diminished since then, with 25 Premier League games in 2017/18 and 22 last season.
He has started three of the Reds’ first four league games this season, though, and now has 103 club appearances to his name.
Wijnaldum has 13 goals in his 145 appearances for Liverpool, an average of one every 11.15 games. Six of those came in his first season at the club, when he also chipped in with 11 assists. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]
He might not have had any goal involvements so far in 2019/20, but the 28-year-old has posted the best passing accuracy of any player in Liverpool’s squad with a 90.7% success rate, once you exclude the solitary successful pass that Adam Lallana made in the four minutes that he has played. Matip has also enjoyed a solid start to the season, with an average of 3.7 successful aerial duels per game the third-highest in the Reds’ squad along with match averages of 1.3 successful tackles and two interceptions – the latter the best figure of any Liverpool player. [via WhoScored.com]
Wijnaldum and Matip have both been important cogs to the Liverpool system, having both surpassed a century of appearances and been regular starters for most of their time at Anfield.
With Jack Lusby of This Is Anfield hinting that Lallana and Dejan Lovren are both likely to leave the club “in the near future“, their departures would lessen Liverpool’s options in midfield and centre-back – the positions in which Wijnaldum and Matip respectively play.
Both of those players have proven to be dependable performers for the Reds over the last three years and would be deserving of new deals at Anfield.
