When it comes to centre-back partnerships in the Premier League, not many get as good as Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk.
The duo were one of the sturdiest in the English top flight last season as Liverpool came inches away from Premier League success from the first time in their history, and for Matip in particular, the club now have the responsibility of retaining the Cameroonian international, which is something that the Merseyside team are reportedly worried about.
According to Football Insider, the Reds are set to schedule contract talks with Matip with the club worried that the 27-year-old’s form this season will attract interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, and for Liverpool, tying Matip down to a new deal is a priority this summer.
Liverpool are unlikely to find any player in world football within their price range this summer that can offer what Matip does for the team. His chemistry with van Dijk is a large reason as to why the club came so close to Premier League greatness, and keeping hold of the African defender will be a massive boost for the side going into next season.
With a Transfermarkt valuation of £18 million, Matip is without question one of the most underrated players in Liverpool’s team, and after such a strong season in the best defence in England it won’t be long until teams around Europe with big pockets come sniffing around.
Matip has been sensational this season, and now the club have to tie the defender down for the foreseeable future if they are to guarantee success in the future.
