The newspaper suggests the Champions League holders are providing “serious competition” to Borussia Dortmund as they look to seal a deal for the 19-year-old winger.
His contract runs out at the end of next season, meaning this would be the last summer to sell before he leaves on a free, and the report claims this has also turned Barcelona’s head. SportBild claimed that the talk of Liverpool’s interest may just be an effort to dramatise the situation.
Torres has featured in each of Valencia’s 10 La Liga games this season, but he’s failed to score in any of them, making just one assist.
His direct contributions don’t look good enough for the interest of such high-calibre clubs, but it’s rare to find a 19-year-old with such top-level experience under his belt.
He played 13 games in La Liga during the 2017/18 season and then 24 last term, proving he’s capable of making a large contribution to a team who finished fourth last year.
Liverpool already have Mohammed Salah to play down the right, so Torres wouldn’t be thrown into the deep end anyway, and he could be used to deepen Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
The Reds’ lack of squad depth, which saw them field numerous youngsters, meant they were nearly knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Arsenal this week, and a similarly weakened side last season saw them dumped out of the FA Cup by Wolves.
Signing players like Torres who can develop as an understudy to Salah would be a good move for Liverpool in the long-term and also for their hopes of winning multiple major trophies in a season.
