Liverpool: Jordan Henderson is Reds’ best player of the 2010s, says Tony Cascarino

Former footballer Tony Cascarino believes that Jordan Henderson is in with a shout of being Liverpool’s best player of the last 10 years.

With a new decade on the horizon, teams and players of the 2010s are being roundly recognised in the footballing world, with Jamie Carragher recently opting to select a Reds team full of current stars for Sky Sports.

But when whittling it down to awarding just one player the accolade of being the decade’s best, Cascarino believes Henderson is the only contender within the Liverpool team.

He told TalkSPORT: “He might not have been as good as Steven Gerrard. Luis Suarez had his brilliance for a year – two years probably.

“And you’ve had some great players play for the club; [Mohamed] Salah has been brilliant for two years, like [Sadio] Mane, and there are a huge amount of players.

“But if you’re talking about 2010 to 2020, Jordan Henderson has done nine years there.

“And he has ended up being part of every manager in that side. So I can’t see how it can be anybody but Jordan Henderson.”

Given Henderson has been at Anfield for the vast majority of the last ten years, Cascarino makes a rather strong argument.

Liverpool’s level of success towards the end of the decade also strengthens Henderson’s case, with the midfielder lifting three trophies in the past year after adding Super Cup and Club World Cup triumphs to their Champions League success that ended a run of over seven years without silverware.

Having become a running theme in those successes (not to mention overtaking Gerrard’s role as captain in doing so), it is difficult to argue that Henderson has not been central to Liverpool’s resurgence since signing in 2011.

While it is likewise tricky to imagine Liverpool’s success without the goals of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah that Cascarino touches upon, his 349 appearances as a Red to date suggests his influence has been unrivalled since he arrived at the club.
