Liverpool are set to battle Premier League rivals Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal for the signature of Real Madrid youngster Martin Odegaard, according to The Sun.
The Norwegian winger has caught the Premier League big hitters’ attention after starring for Real Sociedad while on loan away from the Santiago Bernabeu, and are each keeping an eye on his progress ahead of potential summer 2020 bids.
Odegaard joined Real Madrid at the age of 16, having become the youngest player to appear and score in the Norwegian Premier League (BBC) amid a campaign with Stromsgodset that also saw the youngster handed his senior Norway debut at 15.
His move to the Spanish capital has not resulted in the sort of development he would have been hoping for, with Los Blancos only awarding the Drammen-born prospect two senior outings (TransferMarkt) before he would join Real Sociedad on a season-long loan deal this summer, after temporary spells with SC Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem.
The 20-year-old has since thrived with the San Sebastian outfit to score twice and pen two assists in seven La Liga appearances – including the winning goal away to RCD Mallorca and in a 2-0 home win over Atletico Madrid – and be named Sociedad’s Player of the Month for August.
Real Madrid are believed to hold a recall clause in their agreement with the Txuri-urdinak (Diario AS), but should they look to cash in next summer, The Sun claim Los Blancos would look to receive a £25m fee amid interest from the Premier League, where Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool have the winger firmly on their radars.
Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to be keen on connecting with his compatriot at Old Trafford, as he continues his bid to build a youthful side after deals for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Dan James.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are also plotting an ambitious move for Odegaard (Mirror), with Nuno Espirito Santo’s Black Country outfit sending scouts to the Anoeta Stadium in case Madrid consider offers in the region of £20m in January.
Odegaard is certainly starting to live up to the hype which surrounded his move to Madrid in 2015, as no player has created more chances than the Norwegian, who has played 23 key balls in his first seven La Liga appearances for Real Sociedad (WhoScored).
The 20-year-old has also completed the third-most dribbles of anyone in the Spanish top-flight with 18 successful attempts to Denis Suarez’s 25 and Nabil Fekir’s 21, while also playing an average 58.6 passes per ninety minutes.
It remains to be seen if Real Madrid will consider offers for Odegaard in January or next summer, but £20m to £25m would seem like a bargain compared to some of the fees being spent on players in recent windows.
