Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made a worrying prediction about Brendan Rodgers’ high-flying Leicester City ahead of the Reds’ showdown on Saturday.
The German head coach shared his prediction after beating RB Salzburg 4-3 on Wednesday night, in a game the Anfield natives let slip a 3-0 lead and required a Mohamed Salah brace to ensure the points remained solely on Merseyside.
Liverpool play host to Leicester on Saturday afternoon, with the Foxes looking to claim another big scalp after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at the King Power Stadium last month, along with holding Chelsea to a scored draw at Stamford Bridge in August.
The East Midlands outfit also hit Newcastle United for five the last time they took to the field, and Klopp expects Rodgers’ men to show a constant threat at the weekend if his Liverpool players defend like they did against Salzburg in the Champions League.
Of particular concern to Klopp was Foxes striker Jamie Vardy, who he feels could score five against his side after conceding three to Salzburg, including two goals in four minutes as the Austrian outfit pulled level during the week.
Speaking after the UEFA affair, via quotes by The Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe, Klopp said: “I am sure Brendan Rodgers will think if we protect like we did tonight, Jamie Vardy will run through five times.”
Vardy has scored five times for Leicester already this season to be the Foxes’ leading scorer heading into the weekend meeting at Anfield (WhoScored), where Liverpool have conceded once in each of their three Premier League meetings so far this term.
Liverpool’s defending against Salzburg was criticised after the game, as the Reds maintained their wait for a first clean sheet in any home fixture across all competitions this season.
Chris Sutton (via the Express) claimed the Reds’ backline seemed to pass the buck to one and another rather than taking any responsibility, and their moments of slight relaxation allowed Salzburg to strike.
Doing so against Leicester would easily be problematic for Liverpool, as Vardy is enjoying his start to the campaign with his five goals coming from just seven shots on target, and will be looking to add to his tally if space is there for the 32-year-old to run into.
Vardy scoring will also put a lot of pressure on the likes of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to deliver at the other end of the field, as like Liverpool, Leicester have only conceded five goals this season.
Does Jurgen Klopp need to win the league this season?
