Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp to hand Bobby Duncan pre-season chance

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is set to hand youngster Bobby Duncan a chance to impress in the first-team for the upcoming pre-season fixtures.

The Daily Mail report that the 18-year-old striker, who is the cousin of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, is likely to be involved in the Reds’ first game of pre-season against Tranmere Rovers this week, with a number of foreign clubs reportedly keeping tabs on the promising attacker.

Borussia Dortmund, in particular, have shown a strong interest in Duncan this summer, who has two years left on his current deal at Liverpool.

His form last season in the Reds youth sides alone has proven that the teenage attacker is in line for an opportunity to show Klopp what he is capable of.

Last season the 18-year-old striker scored 25 goals and assisted eight for the Reds across multiple Premier League youth leagues as well as other competitions as Duncan guided Liverpool to their first FA Youth Cup triumph in 12 years (per the Liverpool Echo).

Described by the Liverpool Echo upon his arrival in 2018 as ‘one of the most exciting young strikers’ in the country, he scored 66 goals in the 2015/16 season for Manchester City, who were said to be desperate to keep him at the club.

With Roberto Firmino just starting his summer break following a successful Copa America, it is seemingly likely that Duncan will be in line to make his first-team debut for Liverpool this pre-season, with Klopp himself essentially confirming this via the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds boss said: “A lot of them (academy players) will be part of the US tour, we have to use that because of the number of games we play. We need all of them and that’s nice.

“Only as an example, Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel: our offensive line that played last year is coming pretty late in joining us in the pre-season, so we have to be creative system-wise and all that stuff, but there will be moments when they have to play.”

Duncan impressed last season, and now the striker has seemingly been rewarded for his efforts this summer.
