Kylian Mbappe and Jadon Sancho have been name-checked as “exactly who Liverpool are looking at in 2020” in an article about Premier League transfer targets for next year.
Bleacher Report published a piece which identified the names at the top of several clubs’ shopping lists in 2020, with writer Dean Jones believing that the Reds could try to land a marquee name in the coming months.
The article on Bleacher Report said: “Players like Mbappe and Sancho are exactly who Liverpool are looking at in 2020 because they are at the stage when only players with very special talent can make any difference to their lineup. But at the same time, they will not move heaven and earth to sign them.”
The association of Liverpool with the likes of Mbappe and Sancho is nothing new, based on reports over the last few weeks and months.
Last week, Spanish media outlet El Desmarque reported (via Daily Express) that the Paris Saint-Germain forward is a primary transfer target for the Reds, claiming that they would be willing to spend €250m (£215m) to bring him to the club.
Also, some Liverpool fans on Twitter have been getting quite excited about the prospect of the 20-year-old coming to Anfield after he liked a post by Mohamed Salah on Instagram.
Earlier this year, The Telegraph reported that Jurgen Klopp wanted to bring Borussia Dortmund’s Sancho to Merseyside in 2017, only for his former club Manchester City to veto any move to a Premier League rival.
Liverpool’s manager has spoken highly of the England teenager in the past, hailing him as “an exceptional talent” after the Reds played Borussia Dortmund in a pre-season friendly in July 2018.
Who is the better full-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold or Andrew Robertson?
As with Mbappe, the Anfield club’s impending switch to Nike, and the increase in revenue that would likely bring, led a number of Reds fans on Twitter to believe that it could help lure Sancho to Merseyside.
The statistics and experience boasted by the young duo would indicate that they are two extraordinary talents for their respective ages.
Their TransferMarkt valuations alone hint at their standing in world football – the website values Sancho at £90m, putting him joint-11th in the world, while their £180m valuation of Mbappe is the highest of all.
If Liverpool were to lure either, or even both, to Anfield next year, it would deliver a real statement of intent about the Reds’ ability to land marquee names in the market, while the club’s status as Champions League holders and emphatic Premier League leaders should make them an attractive destination.
However, with Klopp rarely shopping at the top level of the market (he has only bought three players for more than £40.5m, as per TransferMarkt), he could choose to stick with a more conservative transfer policy that has enabled him to bring Liverpool to two Champions League finals (winning one) and the Premier League summit.
