The Liverpool fans have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s impressive run of form both domestically and in Europe.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have begun to find their best form at exactly the right time in recent weeks as they move towards the business end of the season. Liverpool have won 6 of their previous 8 fixtures in the Premier League and also managed to record a thumping 5-0 victory over FC Porto at the Estadio Do Dragao in Portugal last week. Although Liverpool’s results suggest that their attacking endeavours have been the driving force behind their success, their recent acquisition of Virgil Van Dijk has played a pivotal role in The Reds steady improvement.
The Liverpool supporters have used their defensive frailties as the key reason to explain their inability to build a consistent run of form or challenge for silverware in recent years, so it’s no surprise that the signing of Van Dijk has stimulated something of a revival on Merseyside.
However, Liverpool could be set to make one of their wisest transfer decisions in recent years by signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama (valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt) as a replacement for Emre Can this summer.
According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool are monitoring Wanyama’s situation in North-London with doubts lingering over Can’s future. Liverpool are already set to welcome Naby Keita to the club next summer, but the Senegalese international will not provide the club with the defensive midfield anchor that would further strengthen the solidity of their defensive unit.
Wanyama, on the other hand, has both the attributes and the Premier League experience that are needed to fill a noticeable hole in Liverpool’s midfield. The Reds need to add a midfield destroyer to their squad to inject some well-needed balance and steel to their midfield, so Wanyama’s signature should be something of a priority for the club next summer regardless of whether Can departs or not.
