Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have let out a large groan this morning, as it emerged that new deal may not bring the end the transfer links. That, coupled with the loss to Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final, mean our local Reds are somewhat down in the dumps.
Anfield legend Jamie Carragher believes Philippe Coutinho could still join Barcelona despite extending his deal at Liverpool to 2022, although there is not thought to be a release clause in his new contract with the Kop.
The Reds set a club-record with the deal, handing Coutinho around £200k-a-week, but club legend Carragher believes the Reds will struggle to fend off the interest of the Catalan giants and other top sides in European football.
”We’ve had plenty of players in the past Liverpool who have signed big contracts then moved on. If Coutinho wasn’t happy he wouldn’t sign a contract. We hear there’s no release clause which again doesn’t mean everything”, he said to Sky Sports (with our quotes sourced by the Daily Mail.)
‘Liverpool are no different to every other club in world football besides two. If Barcelona or Real Madrid come for one of your players and pay what you want, they’re going, because 99 per cent of players want to play for those two clubs.’
‘If that happens, it means, if they’re unbelievable for Liverpool, then you have to thank him, as we did with Luis Suarez.’
Our landlord agrees with Carragher but believes Liverpool will get a few more years of service from him before an exit occurs. Still, they’ve cast their minds back over a certain Luis Suarez – who signed a new deal just a year before he moved to the Camp Nou for around £75m.
