Liverpool: Many fans still hold Fernando Torres in very high regard

Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres will play in an LFC Legends team against a Barcelona Legends side in a charity game in aid of the LFC Foundation next March, as per liverpoolfc.com.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com about his time at the club, the Spaniard said that he continues to support the Reds and that “The city, fans and club will always be in my heart”, a quote that was shared by Liverpool’s official Twitter channel @LFC in hyperlinking to the interview with the 35-year-old.

Torres came to Liverpool in 2007 for a then-club-record fee of £26.5m (as per The Guardian) and scored 33 goals in his first season at Anfield.

He would go on to score 81 times in 142 appearances for the Reds, but after handing in a transfer request prior to his January 2011 transfer to Chelsea, many Liverpool fans made their feelings known by heckling him and displaying banners conveying their displeasure during his Chelsea debut against his former club a few days later. (as per BBC)

Despite the nature of that transfer, though, these Liverpool supporters on Twitter preferred to focus on the quality he showed as a player for the club in this three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield:
