According to a recent report from The Times, Andre Gomes’ future remains hugely uncertain heading into the January transfer window. The 25-year-old plays his football at Spanish heavyweights Barcelona but is currently on loan at Premier League outfit Everton, where he has shone in the first few months of his stint at Goodison Park to prompt speculation about a permanent move.

And reports suggest that the Portugal international isn’t overly sold on a return to parent club Barcelona after his temporary stint at Everton, which is news that should interest Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, as securing a controversial deal for the 25-year-old would seriously strengthen his midfield options.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, it was against Klopp’s men on Sunday in which Gomes produced a midfield masterclass in a very encouraging Everton display, with Marco Silva’s side only denied a deserved point late on following an error from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

25-year-old Gomes was excellent with the ball at his feet in being calm in possession and seeking to move the Toffees forward, with he and Idrissa Gueye striking up a very solid partnership in the middle of the park to lay the foundations for a decent Everton display.

And while Liverpool got the win in the end, and Fabinho did enjoy arguably his best performance in a Reds shirt on Sunday, the central midfield ranks do appear to be in need of greater quality, with Jordan Henderson one man who often comes under fire from Liverpool fans.

The England international has been a mainstay in Klopp’s team over the years, but he often bears the brunt of criticism from supporters given he isn’t the most talented footballer on the ball - yes, he has a relentless work-ethic and breaks up play well, but he doesn’t possess that quality to regularly unlock opposition backlines.

As such, if Liverpool are to move up a gear and challenge Manchester City going forward, a player of Gomes’ calibre in the middle of the park is exactly what they need, which is why reports that he doesn’t want a Barcelona return must be of interest to Reds chief Klopp.

Not many players have swapped Everton for Liverpool in recent times, with Abel Xavier the last to do so back in 2002, which underlines just how controversial a move it could prove to be - one only had to look at Klopp’s celebrations on Sunday to highlight the strength of the rivalry.

Yet Gomes has all the qualities needed to seriously strengthen Klopp’s Liverpool midfield and thus help take them forward in the near future - they may finally be rid of Henderson were they to make a move for the 25-year-old.
