Liverpool would be an ideal club for Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal to join, in the view of former Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alberto Lopez, who was with the La Liga club for 14 years.
Speaking to Marca, Lopez said: “I really rate him. I don’t think he has a lot of time left at Real Sociedad. He has so much talent and I think he could play in a great team like Chelsea or Liverpool.”
According to The Mirror, the 22-year-old is set to leave Real Sociedad in the coming weeks, with speculation about his departure reportedly rife throughout Spain.
He had a decent scoring record for Real Sociedad last season, scoring 13 times in 37 La Liga games after netting 12 in 35 league matches in the previous campaign, averaging a goal per 2.88 games over the last two years. He also provided 11 assists in those 72 appearances, an average of one per 6.54 games (via Transfermarkt).
Although his scoring ratio isn’t bad, it still pales in comparison with Liverpool’s wide attackers Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, who both scored 22 Premier League goals last season in 36 and 38 games respectively, averaging out at a goal per 1.63 games for Mane and one per 1.72 games for Salah.
One of Oyarzabal’s standout traits, though, is his ability to play in any role across the front line. While left-wing is his preferred position, playing 106 of his 151 games in that position, he has also operated on the right, as a number 10 and as a second striker.
Oyarzabal’s versatility is a major asset and, with Mane missing the start of the season and Roberto Firmino and Salah also playing in international tournaments over the summer, they will likely need to be rested at various stages next season.
However, with a Transfermarkt.co.uk valuation of £45million, the Spain international would not come cheap, and a fee in that region seems excessive for a player whose scoring record is notably inferior to Salah and Mane.
Also, if he were to join Liverpool, that could make it harder for in-form youngsters like Rhian Brewster to get their chance in the first team next season. There is no need for the Reds to go after Oyarzabal right now.
