Liverpool supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side reach the semi-finals of the Champions League courtesy of a crushing 5-1 aggregate win over Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night with a commanding 3-0 advantage over the Premier League champions-elect, and very much hot favourites to reach the last four for the first time since 2008. And the Reds did just that despite falling behind to Gabriel Jesus’ early opener, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino securing victory on the night for the Merseyside giants, thus booking their spot in the semi-finals.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Reds fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are daring to dream about possible European success this term, with the Merseysiders to find out their last four opponents on Friday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpudlians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Juventus with a move for Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele.
But with Klopp’s side arguably in need of greater steel in the middle of the park, the Reds should look to make a move for the £16.2 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old is one of the finest central midfielders in the Premier League and has been for a few years now, with the Belgium international striking up a formidable partnership with Victor Wanyama in Spurs’ run to second in the division last season.
And the former Fulham ace has again proven his worth this time round with 25 Premier League appearances for Pochettino’s side, yet one of his best efforts came in their 2-2 draw with Juventus back in February, a game in which Dembele ran from the middle of the park.
Clearly, the 30-year-old has got everything needed to be a fine midfielder at this level, be it on the ball with his composure and driving runs, or off the ball breaking up play and making timely tackles and interceptions.
And Liverpool appear in need of a player of that ilk next season if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.
The defensive unit is often the one criticised for their vulnerabilities at the back, but they often do not get the required protection from those just in front – Dembele would give them that.
Significantly though, the 30-year-old also possesses quality on the ball so wouldn’t just be in the side to break up play and offer protection; he’d be able to launch attacks and get the front players on the ball as well.
As such, the Reds should seek to make a move for the linked-away Belgian star this summer.
