Liverpool must seek to join and win heavyweight race for linked-away £36m-rated defensive ace

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last couple of days to look back at their side’s impressive season so far, and indeed to look ahead to what could be in store for their club between now and the end of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s men look on course to secure a second successive top four finish in the Premier League, what with the Reds lying third in the table and six points clear of fifth place Chelsea, who have just three games to try and break into the Champions League places. And while their league form has been somewhat sketchy in the last few weeks with three draws in four games, the Merseysiders can reflect on another fine league campaign, and one that surely sets them up for a title push next time round.

As such, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern over the course of the season, many of whom are hoping their side can finish the league season strongly, starting with victory at Chelsea on Sunday.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin.

Yet Klopp’s Liverpool should seek to join and indeed win the heavyweight race for the £36 million-rated defensive ace (as per Transfermarkt), as doing so would bolster the Reds backline ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Ultimately, first-choice right back Nathaniel Clyne has missed the vast majority of the current campaign due to injury, and as such it remains to be seen whether he can re-discover his best form once he returns to full fitness.

And while both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez has done well in his absence, the former in particular in recent times, one wonders whether they can maintain it over the course of a Premier League season.

Yet those doubts cannot be had regarding Bellerin’s ability.

The 23-year-old has been one of the best right backs in the Premier League in the last few years, and was named in the PFA Team of the Year as recently as 2016 for his consistently high-level performances for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Yes, he maybe hasn’t quite been at his best this time round, but it’s arguable that he is just symptomatic of the wider difficulties at Arsenal – just look at how well Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott have done since leaving the Emirates Stadium in the last 12 months.

And with pace to burn, Bellerin is able to get up and down the flanks and thus provide support going forward and indeed the necessary ability at the back, both of which must be of interest to Klopp as he seeks to build a title-winning side for next season.

Obviously, the Spain international won’t come cheap, but given Clyne has spent the best part of eight months out with injury, and Alexander-Arnold and Gomez are both relatively inexperienced at top-flight level, the right back position is one he could seek to bolster this summer.

As such, the Merseyside giants should seek to join and indeed win the race for the 23-year-old defensive star during the close season.
