Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are slowly but surely getting over their side’s agonising Champions League final defeat last month, and as such are beginning to turn their attentions towards the 2018/19 season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were full of confidence heading into the European showpiece in Kiev last weekend, although knew that they had to be at their best to get past two-times defending champions Real Madrid in the Ukrainian capital. Yet the Reds simply weren’t at the level required as a brace from Gareth Bale alongside a Karim Benzema opener secured the victory for the Spanish giants, in turn clinching their third successive European crown, and 13th in their history.
Thus, there have been many disappointed Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Bayern Munich with a move for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
And with the Reds themselves likely eyeing a shot-stopper following Loris Karius’ shocker against Real last weekend, they should join Bayern in keeping tabs on the £27 million-rated goalkeeping ace (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, despite being part of an Everton backline that shipped 58 goals in the Premier League this term, the England international enjoyed a fine debut season at Goodison Park, with ten clean sheets helping the Toffees to an eighth place finish in the top-flight.
And were it not for some heroics from the 24-year-old over the course of the campaign, things could have been a lot worse for the Merseysiders, to the point that Pickford was named as their Player of the Season for his consistently high-level displays for the Toffees.
In fact, the Englishman looks set to get the nod from Gareth Southgate to be England’s number one goalkeeper at this summer’s World Cup, and given how far he has come in a short space of time, and how adept he is at Premier League level, Liverpool simply must monitor his efforts this summer.
Young German goalkeeper Karius endured a miserable night in Kiev last weekend which somewhat summed up his Reds career so far, with it pretty evident that the 24-year-old is not good enough consistently to help Klopp’s side fight for the Premier League title.
And while Pickford himself isn’t yet in that world-class group of goalkeepers in the top-flight, which incorporates the likes of David De Gea, Ederson, and Thibaut Courtois, he is certainly showing signs that he could make that elite group in the future.
The Everton ace has a good command of his penalty box and physically seeks to take charge of his area, while he is very adept with the ball at his feet – that aspect itself looks to be the key in him winning the battle with Jack Butland for the England jersey this summer.
And while Karius also is solid with the ball at his feet, he is nowhere near as good a shot-stopper as Pickford, while the current Reds goalkeeper doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence when seeking to claim or punch away crosses.
Whereas Pickford is slowly but surely becoming a top-quality goalkeeper and one destined for big things – there’s a reason Bayern are reportedly keen on the 24-year-old’s services.
And Liverpool should seek to join the German giants in keeping tabs on Pickford at this summer’s World Cup, what with Klopp seeking an answer to their obvious goalkeeper problems.
