Paul Merson has questioned why Jurgen Klopp has not moved to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Liverpool, claiming he believes the Reds should “have a look” at the Arsenal striker.
Aubameyang has been heavily linked with a move away from Arsenal, via Football.London, with Manchester United and Barcelona both mentioned as possible destinations for the 30 year-old, who will be out of contract in the summer of 2021. Of course, he wouldn’t be the first goal machine to swap north London for Manchester in recent years, and Gunners fans will be hoping he doesn’t pull a Robin van Persie.
However, Merson, who spent 12 years at Arsenal and is now a regular pundit on Sky Sports, has a different destination in mind, via Football.London: “I think if you were Liverpool you would have a look and Jurgen Klopp knows him very well from their time together at Borussia Dortmund, but it does worry me that Klopp hasn’t gone in for him. He would surely know him better than anyone.”
The 52 year-old seems to believe the fact that Klopp has not tried to bring the Gabon international to Anfield is a bad sign, but he certainly isn’t wrong in thinking that adding his goalscoring prowess to Liverpool’s ferocious attack would truly be a sight to behold.
Aubameyang has scored 20 times in all competitions this season, per Transfermarkt, and his consistency really is remarkable, boasting 30 or more goals in each of the last four full campaigns. Starting his career as a winger before moving into a central position, he has a stunning 176 goals and 54 assists in 273 games as an out-and-out centre forward, which is 0.84 goal involvements per game.
With Roberto Firmino coming under criticism this season for his lack of productivity in front of goal, perhaps the Reds could move for Klopp’s former student if the reported interest in Timo Werner doesn’t pan out, as it is clear they are in the market a fast striker who can provide both competition and support for Firmino.
