Former Liverpool footballer Phil Thompson thinks the Reds will see off Southampton in their weekend Premier League meeting at Anfield – but has warned that the league leaders will be up against a fearless Saints side.
Southampton have hauled themselves into the top half after a sparkling set of results over the Christmas period which has seen them lose just one of their last nine matches in all competitions.
Making his predictions for Sky Sports, although Thompson backed a 2-0 victory for his former team, he noted that the Saints will be in high spirits, such has been their form in recent weeks.
He said: “Southampton, three or four weeks ago, could be coming to Anfield with trepidation, but they will not have any fear this time. The talisman Danny Ings is coming back to Anfield, so they will be feeling a lot more comfortable taking Liverpool on. Liverpool have to keep their focus, with every game.”
Thompson perhaps does Southampton a disservice in suggesting that they will have feared a trip to Anfield at the start of the month, for that was long after Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side had started their season’s revival with away victories at once-relegation rivals Aston Villa and Champions League-chasing Chelsea, no less.
Having beaten Spurs and won at Leicester City since the turn of the year, Thompson is probably right to suggest that Southampton may feel they’ll have nothing to lose ahead of their trip to Merseyside.
That said, Liverpool have been quite literally unstoppable at home in the league, with the Reds winning every top-flight game at Anfield throughout the past 12 months.
Therefore, the fact that Thompson still backs Liverpool to not be troubled by their opponents this afternoon perhaps speaks to the strength of the Reds right now considering Southampton’s own relatively impressive run of form.
