Liverpool potentially handed boost in quest to keep key man at club

Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern have really been on tenterhooks this last few weeks with the Philippe Coutinho situation on going and looking set to drag on further yet.

There’s been rumblings about the Brazilian’s future for some time but in recent times things have really escalated and now it looks as though Barcelona are going to try their hardest to sign him.

Indeed, huge figures are being touted to prise away the star but it does look as though Liverpool are not going to budge from their stance that he’s not going anywhere.

For sure, then, an impasse appears to be on the horizon and it looks as though some of the Barca hierarchy are beginning to have doubts over whether the deal will even happen.

Indeed, as quoted by The Liverpool Echo, the Catalans’ Sporting Director Robert Fernandez has admitted that it is going to be hard to try and get the midfielder in by the end of the window.

He said:

“Not just Barca but any team looking for top quality players are getting involved in a very difficult situation in this market.

“Why? Because the market is where clubs like us want to sign top quality players. There’s no buy-out clauses so that makes things trickier.”

This one, then, is far from over and it does look as though it really could go either way as contrasting reports continue to swirl around.

Landlord’s Verdict

You get the feeling that this one is going to go down right to the wire this summer and it really is hard to say whether or not Coutinho is going to go.

Liverpool seem to have the upper hand with the fact that there is a few years on the player’s contract but Barca are offering unreal amounts of money by the looks of things so considering a sale shouldn’t be ruled out.
