Liverpool are claimed to be the ‘biggest admirers’ for Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo.
According to Diario de Sevilla via Sport Witness, Liverpool are interested in the Spanish full-back, who enjoyed a breakout season with the La Liga side as the Dominican Republic-born defender scored three and assisted five in 29 appearances for the Seville-based club in all competitions.
Manchester City have also been mentioned in the Spanish media this summer (per Sport via Sport Witness) as a side who were interested in Firpo as well as Real Madrid, however, the two clubs have both since gone on to sign left-backs in the form of Angelino and Ferland Mendy.
With Andy Robertson Liverpool’s only natural left-back following the release of Alberto Moreno this summer (per BBC Sport), a move for a backup in this position is a seemingly sensible move for Jurgen Klopp in this transfer window, and Firpo could be an ideal fit.
Valued at £22.5 million on Transfermarkt, the Spain U-21 international largely played as a left wing-back for Betis last season as Quique Setien mainly deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation as tactical and positional stats also from Transfermarkt show, with Firpo only playing four times at left-back.
Indeed, this versatility means that Firpo can not only cover Robertson but also Sadio Mane further up the flank if necessary, as Transfermarkt shows that Ben Woodburn is the only backup to the Liverpool number 10 in the squad.
After an impressive season with Betis, Firpo could be ready to make the jump to the Premier League, and the Spanish youth international has shown he is capable of playing down the left flank in both defence and attack.
Liverpool fans, would Firpo be a good squad player next season? Let us know!
