Liverpool could consider selling winger Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.
They report that the Merseyside club would be open to a departure if an offer of £25m comes in, meaning the 28-year-old’s days at Anfield could be numbered. If that turns out to be the case, it could help pave the way for a big name to arrive.
RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is just one high-profile player currently been linked with a move to the Premier League leaders, with The Athletic reporting that the 23-year-old is of interest to Jurgen Klopp.
With The Athletic’s Raphael Honigstein confirming that Werner does in fact have a release clause in his contract, the £25m that Liverpool could potentially gain from Shaqiri’s sale could be put towards it, while the Swiss international’s exit would leave space for the German.
Albeit not a natural wide man like Shaqiri, Werner has played there this season and has impressed. According to WhoScored, he has been deployed on the left flank in the Bundesliga on seven occasions, scoring four goals. He has also averaged 1.8 dribbles per game, which is significantly more than Shaqiri’s average of 0.3 last term.
Taking all that into account, as well as Shaqiri’s injury record, selling the former Stoke City man and putting that money towards Werner could prove to be world-class business.
As well as providing an alternative to Roberto Firmino up front, Werner has also proven that he can be an effective option out wide, an option more potent than Shaqiri.
