Liverpool: Reds target Federico Chiesa reportedly wants to join Juventus - Liverpool

Liverpool transfer target Federico Chiesa wants to leave Fiorentina for Juventus this summer, according to reports from Italy.

Football Italia reported that Sky Sport Italia showed footage of the 21-year-old sitting in Fiorentina’s team bus in discussions with several club officials after his team-mates had disembarked. According to the same outlet via Football Italia, the forward is ready to demand a move to Juventus.

The Guardian had previously reported that Liverpool were interested in bringing Chiesa to Anfield, with Fiorentina valuing the Italy international at £62million.

Chiesa scored 12 goals and provided nine assists in 41 appearances for Fiorentina last season, an average of 0.29 goals and 0.22 assists per game.

With 3,383 minutes of game-time last season, that works out at a goal per 281.91 minutes and an assist every 375.89 minutes.

While his main role is as a right-wing forward, he has shown that he can play anywhere across the attack or midfield, as well as in a number 10 or second striker role.

Chiesa’s dribbling ability is highlighted as one of his primary attributes on WhoScored.com and he averaged 2.1 dribbles per game last season.

In The Guardian, Paolo Bandini highlighted his “keen work ethic” and “admirable commitment to tracking back“, traits that have lent themselves to winning 1.2 tackles per game in an unselfish contribution to his team.

Chiesa would have found it very difficult to nudge his way into the right-sided position of Liverpool’s attack ahead of Mohamed Salah, scorer of 27 goals and provider of 13 assists in 52 games for the Reds last season, averaging 0.52 goals and 0.25 assists per game.

The Egypt forward played 4,342 minutes for Liverpool last season, scoring one goal per 160.81 minutes and providing one assist per 334 minutes.

Salah had the same dribbles per game ratio as Chiesa but showed much less of an appetite to contribute defensively, with only 0.6 tackles per match.

With Salah more prolific and creative in attack and Chiesa more likely to track back for the good of the team, the Italy man could potentially have been deployed in a midfield position by Jurgen Klopp.

Chiesa’s tackling rate shows that he has the willingness to engage in some midfield dirty work, while he could have also filled Liverpool’s need for more goals from midfield – the Reds’ midfielders scored just 17 goals between them last season, five of which were penalties from James Milner.

Chiesa would not have been likely to threaten Salah for a starting place in Liverpool’s line-up, but having scored 12 goals last season when the Reds’ midfield managed only 17 put together, he could have been utilised by Klopp as an attack-minded midfielder.

However, with Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back from long injury layoffs, Liverpool could already have options in place to provide that greater attacking thrust from midfield, so it would have made little sense to spend £62m to prise Chiesa from Fiorentina.
