“Liverpool NEED a left-back”, is a phrase often uttered by one Transfer Tavern punter, so TuttoMercatoWeb’s claims that Torino’s right-sided defender Davide Zappacosta is wanted has come as a bit of a surprise.
The two-cap Italy international has impressed this season with Torino, but with Nathaniel Clyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, he seems adequately stocked for 2017/18, whereas on the opposite flank converted midfielder James Milner is ahead of the haphazard Alberto Moreno in a much weaker set-up.
Alas, TMW claim that Liverpool are indeed after Zappacosta, who is valued at around €15m (£13m) by the Serie A side.
However, the Reds are not the only team tracking the 24-year-old, with Roma and Napoli also keen.
Zappacosta has made 22 league appearances this term, providing three assists, helping Torino to a steady midtable position.
His form during the early stages of the season led to a first international call-up, with the defender making his Azzurri debut vs. Lichtenstein in a World Cup qualifier.
James Milner will still be Liverpool’s main left-back next season – agree?
