Liverpool: Rio Ferdinand makes prediction about the Reds’ Champions League chances - Liverpool

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has confessed that he feels Liverpool will win the Champions League this season.

The Reds are chasing their first back-to-back European crown since 1978 after beating Tottenham 2-0 in last year’s final in Madrid. Speaking after Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Real Madrid, he told BT Sport (cited by the Liverpool Echo) that the Merseysiders have what it takes to win the biggest prize in European football once more.

The 41-year-old admitted: “I can’t look no further than Liverpool if I’m honest. I think they’ll go through against Atletico Madrid. I think it’s a tough game but I think Anfield gives it a different dimension. Bayern Munich looked great yesterday against a team who are searching for form and their own identity at the moment in Chelsea. So they may have peaked a bit early, who knows – going forward they are great but defensively I would be concerned a little bit about Bayern. But Liverpool are my standout favourites.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 1-0 in the first leg of their last 16 clash against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, the venue of their last European success. The Reds still have every chance of going through to the next round and have been tipped to do so. After what has been an astonishing league campaign for them, it is hard to disagree with Ferdinand on his point. Despite having lost to Napoli and Atletico in the Champions League this season, they have not lost a league game for over a year, with their last defeat in the competition being a 2-1 loss to Manchester City last season, as per the Express.

Liverpool have every chance of going all the way and winning the seventh European Cup in the club’s history, however surprising it may be to hear a former Red Devil be the one to say it. Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said that the “soul” of Anfield is why opposing teams find it so difficult to play there, Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat in last season’s semi-final second leg being a perfect case in point. The Merseysiders do indeed have a great chance to win again. If they secure the Premier League title early, then this may make the task easier.
