When Liverpool required a hero to break the indestructible Bayern Munich at their own yard, it wasn’t Mohamed Salah, but Sadio Mane who rose up. Clearly, no Red reading this will need reminding of that fact, but the latter outshining the former really is something to note.
Indeed, Mane seemed to thrive the opportunity of running riot at the Allianz Arena, moving forward with purpose and running rings around Rafinha. 13 goals in 19 Champions League – including Liverpool’s goal in last season’s final – prove the former Southampton ace really is the man for the big season.
He ended up bamboozling not only the defender, but also Manuel Neuer, en route to scoring the stunning opener in Bavaria, with the game seeming to stop for him while the Bayern defence fumbled about. That’s class. That’s real Champions League class, making the game seem easy.
A hard-working figure who ran his socks off, Mane’s work-rate was later rewarded when Salah played in a beautiful cross for him to put the tie to bed.
Ironically, he had only scored a single goal in seven Champions League appearances prior to this. However, cometh the hour, cometh the man. The brace took his season’s tally to 19 in 37 appearances, only one behind Salah despite having played three lesser games and the Senegal star doesn’t get enough credit when it comes to ranking Europe’s best attackers.
He really is that good.
As Liverpool rally forward in big competitions, Mane’s incisiveness and skill in front of goal is helping their cause. The skilfull winger uses his intelligence, pace and hard-working ability to get into promising positions and has notched up his finishing ability by strides this season.
Who needs Philippe Coutinho? Liverpool’s new #10 is making the kind of impact that shirt is expected to make.
Mane might not be creating much, yet he’s incisive enough of scoring clutch goals to get big wins for Liverpool and is ending up outperforming Salah in all fronts.
In Sadio Mane, Liverpool have one of the best attackers in the world.
