Liverpool supporters have been pretty buoyant in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team secure a second successive top four finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 4-0 win over Brighton on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their final clash of the campaign knowing a point would be enough to secure another season of Champions League football, yet they produced another attacking masterclass to swat aside the Seagulls thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Dejan Lovren, Dominic Solanke, and Andrew Robertson. As such, the Reds finished the season in fourth place, five points clear of last year’s champions Chelsea, but 25 adrift of this term’s winners Manchester City.
Nonetheless, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are already turning their attentions towards the summer, and as such are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Ousmane Dembele with a move away from Barcelona during the close season.
And with the Reds linked with the winger, they simply must seek to complete a deal for the £72 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), as doing so would provide further competition in the forward ranks, and thus give the likes of Salah and Sadio Mane something to think about.
Ultimately, the duo plus Roberto Firmino have become one of the most lethal front lines in European football this term, having scored a simply magnificent 90 goals between them in all competitions – 44 for Salah, 27 for Firmino, and 19 for Mane.
Thus, manager Klopp simply isn’t going to change them very often given how brilliant they have been as a unit this term, but outside of the trio, there are very few options close to their level available to the Liverpool boss, certainly as replacements for widemen Mane and Salah.
Solanke led the line against Brighton on Sunday, and while he took his goal very well, that was his first in a Liverpool shirt, while Danny Ings is clearly a very adept striker, but simply isn’t at the level of any of the front three.
Yet Dembele’s arrival this summer would go some way to providing stern competition for the likes of Salah and Mane, what with the 21-year-old one of the most talented and exciting young players in world football.
The winger excelled at German side Borussia Dortmund to earn himself a mega money move to Barcelona last summer, yet things haven’t quite gone to plan for the France international at the Nou Camp, with just four goals to show for his efforts this season.
Yes, injuries did play a part in his struggles in the first half of the campaign, but one mustn’t forget that the Frenchman was simply brilliant for Dortmund in scoring ten goals and laying on a sensational 21 assists for the club. And with three goals and six assists in La Liga since the turn of the year, he’s starting to find his feet in the Spanish top-flight.
As such, it’s pretty evident that Dembele is an outstanding prospect and someone who’d bolster any side in the Premier League, even Klopp’s free-scoring Liverpool.
And with the depth not quite there at Anfield to keep the likes of Salah and Mane on their toes, the 21-year-old’s arrival this summer would certainly give the widemen something to think about heading into the 2018/19 season.
