Liverpool supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team reach the final of the Champions League courtesy of a 7-6 aggregate victory over Roma in the last four.
Jurgen Klopp’s men took a commanding 5-2 lead into the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night after a breathless first leg at Anfield last week, and they strengthened their position when Sadio Mane netted after just nine minutes in the Italian capital. A James Milner own goal gave the hosts hope before Georginio Wijnaldum netted midway through the first half, only for Roma to score three times in the second period to give the Reds something to think about, although Klopp’s side held on to book their place in the showpiece later this month.
Subsequently, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hugely excited by their side’s clash with defending champions Real Madrid in the final in Kiev on May 26, as the Reds go in search of a sixth European crown.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Southampton will listen to offers for defender Ryan Bertrand this summer.
And Liverpool should make the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) the next Southampton star to swap St Mary’s for Anfield this summer, following in the footsteps of Mane, Virgil van Dijk, and Adam Lallana, to name but a few.
Ultimately, while Andrew Robertson has excelled in the left back department in the last few months, the competition in that particular area of the pitch is limited.
Alberto Moreno may well have started the season well but he has since been inconsistent and nearer the levels he produced last time round, a campaign which saw midfielder Milner often preferred by Klopp at left back.
Thus, if the Reds are serious about challenging for major honours again next season, they have to have options in every area of the squad, not least in defence, an area that has been criticised regularly ever since Klopp took over as manager back in October 2015.
And Bertrand’s arrival would certainly bolster those ranks.
The 28-year-old may not have enjoyed his best season this time round at Southampton, but his consistently high-level displays in the last few years simply mustn’t be forgotten – after all, he has become England’s number one left back in recent times, which is testament to his efforts given the quality Gareth Southgate has in that position.
Be it bombing up and down the left-hand-side to help out in attack, or indeed showing great defensive discipline in his own box, Bertrand has it all, and has certainly proven his capabilities in the Premier League for many years now.
And they wouldn’t just be signing another squad player to fill the numbers either, as Bertrand is plenty good enough to compete and indeed dispose Robertson of the left back spot in Klopp’s side, and that competition can only be good for the duo, the manager, and indeed Liverpool.
Thus, with Southampton reportedly ready to sell, the Reds must seek to lure Bertrand to Merseyside this summer.
