Liverpool should sign this £14.4m-rated freebie to partner Naby Keita next season

The Liverpool fans have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after their weekend victory over Southampton helped them close the gap on 2nd placed Manchester United in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side took another step towards qualifying for the Champions League on Sunday as they comfortably strolled to a 2-0 win over Southampton at Saint Mary’s Stadium. The Reds are now just two points adrift of Manchester United in 2nd place, although the fact that Spurs are just 2 points behind them in 5th place serves to illuminate how intensely competitive the race for the top-four will be in the final weeks of the season.

Liverpool will be focusing solely on Champions League qualification from now until the end of the campaign, as Manchester City’s dominance at the top of the table leaves no scope for a late title push this season. However, everybody involved with the club will be hoping that they can bridge the gap on The Citizens next season and go toe to toe with Guardiola’s side.

In order to achieve that aim, Liverpool will need to increase their investment in the transfer market and bolster Klopp’s options in various areas of the pitch. Liverpool have already agreed a deal to bring Naby Keita to the club next season from RB Leipzig, and there is already plenty of hype around the club due to his imminent arrival.

Man City have spent huge sums of money to establish the domination they are exerting right now, but Liverpool may not need to be so frivolous to rival the current league-leaders next season. If they are wise in the transfer market next summer, Liverpool could bring Schalke midfielder Max Meyer (valued at £14.4 million by Transfermarkt) to the club on a free transfer.

Meyer is set to become a free agent next summer, and Liverpool are interested in signing him when his contract expires according to The Daily Star. Considering Emre Can’s future at the club is in doubt and Georginio Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson have lacked consistency this season, Liverpool should step up their interest and bring the highly-regarded 22-year-old to Anfield to partner Naby Keita in central midfield.
