Alisson Becker’s world-record move to Liverpool has caused a massive stir on Merseyside.
Jurgen Klopp finally lost patience with his goalkeepers and spend big this summer. The German was left with no choice but to splash a record £67m to sign the Brazilian from Roma. He will link up with the squad for their pre-season friendly against Napoli in Dublin.
His arrival has already caused a huge shakeup at Anfield. Danny Ward was allowed to leave the club after three years, signing for Leicester in a £12.5m deal. Simon Mignolet is also expected to depart after slipping down the pecking order. Now, perhaps Loris Karius will consider his future at the club after losing his place in the side.
Three departures would leave Liverpool in need of a new backup goalkeeper in case Alisson is injured. The perfect man for the job could be Burnley stopper – Tom Heaton. Valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt, the 32-year-old has been a key player for the Clarets during their time in the Premier League. However, an injury suffered last season allowed Nick Pope to stake his claim for the number one jersey at Turf Moor.
Pope is likely to start the season as first-choice after earning a place in England’s World Cup squad following his performances. Heaton could decide to seek pastures new.
The former Manchester United stopper would be an excellent understudy to the Brazilian at Anfield. Heaton is one of the most reliable ‘keepers in the Premier League and would also help Klopp fill his homegrown quota next year.
Should Karius and Mignolet depart, Heaton is the man to replace them.
Liverpool fans, do you think Loris Karius should leave the club?
