Simon Hughes has provided an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Timo Werner and has stated that talks are still in the ‘informal stage’.
The Merseyside outfit have been linked with the RB Leipzig star for several months now, with James Pearce commenting that Werner would be ‘perfect’ for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Talking transfers on ‘The Red Agenda’ podcast, The Athletic duo revealed that no deal has been pushed for the German as of yet.
“At the end of February, everybody expected Liverpool to formalise their interest in Timo Werner around this time,” Hughes said. “But things have gone quiet with everything that is going on. The discussions remain at the informal stage.”
This revelation will be disheartening for the Reds who are desperate for the 24-year-old to join Liverpool. Werner currently boasts an astounding 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga matches this season, with 27 goals and 12 assists in total across all competitions (via Transfermarkt).
Would Timo Werner start over Roberto Firmino at Liverpool?
Adding Werner to Liverpool’s ranks would not only add more goals, but create a brand new attacking dynamic. If Klopp opts to keep the regular front three, Roberto Firmino could play just behind Werner who would likely start up top. Not only could huge, positive change be on the horizon, but Liverpool’s attackers would have some much-needed quality back-up.
Do you think Liverpool will get it done, Reds? When are you expecting Timo Werner to join Anfield?
