The Brazil midfielder has received four yellow cards in the league already this season and, if he picks up another at Villa Park this weekend, he would then be suspended for the league leaders’ game against closest challengers Manchester City the following week.

As noted by the Liverpool Echo, any player who receives five yellow cards before matchday 19 (which falls on Boxing Day) will incur a one-game suspension.

The 25-year-old has been an integral presence in Jurgen Klopp’s line-up so far this season, being ever-present in the Champions League and starting all but one Premier League game. [via TransferMarkt]

His importance to the team is demonstrated by several statistics from WhoScored.com – nobody has won more tackles per game for the Reds than his 2.5, while his 1.3 interceptions per game is bettered by only four players and his 86.8% passing accuracy is the sixth-highest in the squad.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter would rather see him omitted from the line-up against Aston Villa so that he won’t run the risk of suspension for the Manchester City game on November 10th:
